Renewing the Humanitarian Security Protection Permit (PPSH) in Panama: how to extend for six more years.

The PPSH grants two years of residence and then extends for up to six more, for a total path of eight years. Here we explain when and how to renew, the updated requirements the National Immigration Service asks for, the costs, and why it pays to start early. At iurispa we handle your renewal end to end.

Published in the source: Last date stated:

The Humanitarian Security Protection Permit (PPSH) does not end after two years. Whoever obtained the initial temporary residence can extend it for up to six (6) additional years, meeting the updated requirements. Across both stages, the PPSH offers a path of up to eight years of immigration stability while you build your life in Panama.

If you don't have the permit yet, start with our guide to the PPSH — requirements, costs, and deadline 2026. This guide is for those who already hold it and are approaching expiration.

When do you renew?

The extension is filed before your two-year temporary residence expires. Don't cut it close: gathering updated proofs, apostilles, and records takes time, and filing the renewal while your permit is still valid keeps you from falling back into an irregular situation.

Rule of thumb: start gathering your documents two or three months before the expiration date shown on your card.

What the renewal requires

Unlike the first application, the renewal is about proving you keep a real, regular tie to the country. The National Immigration Service asks for updated requirements, including:

  1. Extension request filed through a legal representative.
  2. Copy of the passport and of the valid PPSH card.
  3. Social-security proof (CSS) or an income-tax filing, as evidence of regular economic or work activity.
  4. Updated proof of address.
  5. Valid criminal-record certificate, as Immigration may require.
  6. Clearance of prior immigration obligations.

Renewal costs

As with the first application, we show you upfront what the State charges and what the process costs. The official fees for the extension and the card update are confirmed at filing, per the National Immigration Service's current schedule; on top of that come professional fees and the file's expenses (notarizations, apostilles, certificates). In your assessment we give you a fixed quote, with no surprises.

How we handle it for you

  1. We check your card's expiration date and build the calendar to file on time.
  2. We gather the updated proofs (CSS or income tax, address, background).
  3. We prepare and file the extension request with the National Immigration Service.
  4. We follow up until approval and delivery of your renewed card.
Steps declared in Iurispa (4)

Historical sequence from the source; not current legal instructions.

  1. Check the expiration date on your card

We read the expiry date on your PPSH card and build the calendar so the extension is filed in time, starting two or three months ahead.

  2. Gather the updated proofs

Social-security proof or an income-tax filing, updated proof of address, a valid police record and clearance of prior immigration obligations.

  3. File the extension request

A legal representative files the extension request with the National Immigration Service.

  4. Follow up until the card is issued

We track the file through approval and the delivery of your renewed card, for up to six additional years of residence.

How many years does the renewal last?

The extension is up to six years, added to the initial two: a total path of up to eight years.

What if I let the permit expire?

It's best not to reach that point, but it isn't hopeless. In your assessment we review your situation and clearly explain your options to regularize again.

Do I absolutely need social security?

The CSS proof is one way to show regular activity; an income-tax filing is another. We work out which fits your case.

Can I keep working during the process?

Filing the renewal while your permit is still valid is exactly what protects your work situation. That's why we insist on starting early.
