Where to Get Married in Panama: Notary, Family Court or Civil Registry.
In Panama a civil marriage can be held through several routes — notary, municipal family court and Civil Registry — and the choice affects speed, cost and convenience. This guide compares the options and explains which usually suits residents and which suits foreigners and couples on a tight schedule.
Many couples don't know that in Panama there is more than one place to marry, and that the choice changes the speed, cost and convenience of the process. Choosing well is the difference between a wedding scheduled quickly and one that drags. This guide compares the options. For requirements, see requirements to get married in Panama.
Note: general information valid as of the update date, under the Family Code (Law 3 of 1994). Confirm times and costs with the authority and a lawyer.
The competent routes
- Notary. A notary public can officiate the civil marriage. It stands out for its flexibility of dates and speed, which makes it popular with non-residents and couples with little time.
- Municipal family court. The ordinary judicial route for civil marriage, with its own timelines and formalities.
- Civil Registry (National Directorate or regional offices). The entity that registers the marriage in any case also has authority to officiate it.
All produce exactly the same legal result: a valid civil marriage, registered with the Civil Registry.
Which suits your case
- Non-residents / visiting foreigners: the notary is usually the most practical, for its date flexibility.
- Residents in no rush: any of the three; cost or proximity may weigh.
- Weddings with a symbolic date or little margin: the notary's speed helps secure the day.
Whatever the route, the substantive requirements are the same: identity documents, prenuptial medical certificate, two witnesses and — for foreigners — apostilled papers. What changes is the procedure and timing, not the conditions to marry.
After the ceremony
Whatever the authority, the marriage is registered with the Civil Registry, which issues the certificate. If you'll use it abroad, plan the apostille or legalization.
