Most marriages in Panama follow the ordinary civil path, but life presents situations that don't fit that mold: a party who cannot travel, a medical emergency, a voyage at sea, an ancestral tradition. For all of them, the Family Code provides **special marriages**. This guide walks through them.

> **Note:** general information valid as of the update date, under the Family Code (Law 3 of 1994). Given their special nature, confirm each case with a lawyer.

## The special marriages the law recognizes

- **Marriage by proxy.** When one spouse cannot be present and grants a special power of attorney to be represented at the ceremony. We detail it in [marriage by proxy in Panama](/guias/marriage-by-proxy-in-panama/).
- **Marriage in imminent danger of death.** For when urgency does not allow the ordinary procedure; the law provides formalities adapted to that situation.
- **Marriage aboard a ship or aircraft.** Contemplates the ceremony during a voyage, with the rules proper to that circumstance.
- **Common-law marriage (unión de hecho).** The stable cohabitation the law recognizes with the effects of marriage; see [common-law marriage in Panama](/guias/common-law-marriage-in-panama/).
- **Marriage among indigenous groups.** That held according to the customs and traditions of indigenous peoples, recognized by law.

## Why they are regulated separately

Each of these marriages answers a **circumstance the ordinary procedure doesn't cover well**: the absence of a party, a vital emergency, the isolation of a voyage, an already-consolidated cohabitation, or a cultural tradition. The law recognizes them, but with **their own formalities**, and there lies the care: meeting exactly the requirements of each figure is what ensures its validity.

## When to seek counsel

Precisely because their forms are particular — a power that must be properly granted, an urgency that demands acting fast and well, a recognition that must be documented — these marriages are the ones that benefit most from legal assistance. An omitted requirement can cast doubt on the bond.
