Marrying in one country and living in another is increasingly common, and with it a question that surprises many couples: **your marriage doesn't "travel" on its own**. For it to have full effect in Panama — or for a Panamanian marriage to be valid abroad — there's a recognition step worth resolving in time. This guide explains it in both directions.

> **Note:** general information valid as of the update date. Procedures vary by country of origin or destination; confirm your case with a lawyer.

## From abroad into Panama: registering a foreign marriage

If you married abroad and want your marriage to have full effect in Panama — for property, inheritance, procedures or immigration — you normally must **register it with the Civil Registry**. The typical elements:

- **[Apostilled](/guias/apostille-and-document-authentication-panama/) marriage certificate** (or consular-legalized if the country is not party to the Hague Convention).
- **Translation** by an authorized public translator, if in another language.
- **Registration procedure** before the Civil Registry.

Once recognized, the marriage produces in Panama the same effects as one held here.

## From Panama abroad: validating a Panamanian marriage

Conversely, if you married in Panama and need it to be valid in another country — for residency, an inheritance, or a procedure abroad — the **Panamanian certificate usually requires an apostille or legalization** by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and sometimes registration before the authorities of the country where it will be used.

If you know from the start you'll use the marriage abroad, plan this step when marrying (see [how a foreigner gets married in Panama](/guias/how-a-foreigner-gets-married-in-panama/)).

## Why not leave it for later

Recognition tends to become urgent exactly when there's no time: an immigration procedure, an inheritance, a property purchase. Resolving it in advance — apostilles, translations and registration — prevents a valid marriage from being, in practice, unusable where it's needed.
