In Panama, your work is protected by copyright **from the moment you create it**, with no formality required. So why register it? Because registration is your **proof**: it establishes a certain date and authorship, and it is the difference between claiming something is yours and being able to prove it. This guide explains how it works in 2026.

> **Note:** general information current as of the date. The law and fees can change; confirm your case with a lawyer.

## Who registers: the DNDA (Ministry of Culture)

Registration is handled by the **National Copyright Directorate (DNDA)**, part of the **Ministry of Culture (MiCultura)**. (Beware of outdated information: some pages still place it under the Ministry of Commerce; today the correct entity is the DNDA of MiCultura.)

## Which works can be registered

Law 64 of 2012 protects a broad list of creations:

- **Literary** (books, articles, scripts).
- **Musical and dramatic** (songs, compositions, plays).
- **Artistic** (painting, sculpture, photography, architecture, design).
- **Audiovisual and radio** (films, videos, programs).
- **Software / computer programs** (source code, object code and documentation), websites and multimedia.
- **Databases** and collections.

## Protection is automatic (but registration is worth it)

Registration in Panama is **declarative, not constitutive**: it does not create the right, it *declares* it. Your work is already protected upon creation (Berne Convention principle). Even so, registering it gives you:

- **Proof of authorship and a certain date** against plagiarism or disputes.
- A basis to **license, assign or sell** your work with certainty.
- A title that makes it easier to **enforce your rights** before courts or platforms.

## How long protection lasts

- **General rule:** the author's lifetime **plus 70 years** after death.
- **Software, collective and audiovisual works:** **70 years from first publication**.
- **Moral rights** (authorship and integrity of the work) are perpetual, inalienable and non-waivable.

## How much it costs (official fees)

Here is good news almost nobody publishes: the **State's official fees are minimal**.

| Item | Official fee |
|---|---|
| Registration (natural person) | **B/. 5.00** |
| Registration (legal entity) | **B/. 10.00** |
| Stamps on notification (resolution) | **B/. 2.00** |
| Stamps (certificate) | **B/. 4.00** |

The total state cost is around **B/. 20**. What you hire a lawyer for are the **handling fees**: preparing the deposit correctly, classifying the work, drafting assignments or licenses, and avoiding mistakes that cost dearly later. The process usually takes a few weeks.

## Do it yourself or with a lawyer?

For a simple work and a natural person, the process can be done directly with the DNDA. It is worth delegating when there are **several authors, assignments of rights, works made for hire, company software or clients abroad**, where an error in ownership is expensive down the line.
